China says it shut down 12,575 Internet cafes in crackdown

BEIJING - Chinese authorities shut down more than 12,575 Internetcafes from October to December last year for operating illegally, thegovernment said.

The purpose of the crackdown was to create a "safer environmentfor young people in China," the official Xinhua News Agency saidSunday. It didn't give details of the violations, but said thebusinesses closed "were mainly located nearby primary schools andmiddle schools."

China promotes Internet use for business and education, butcommunist authorities complain that Internet cafes harm publicmorality by giving children access to violent games and sexuallyexplicit material.
