Qld: Court complex to be completed by end of 2003

BRISBANE, April 9 AAP - A $100 million Brisbane Magistrate Court complex should be
completed by the end of 2003, the Queensland government announced today.

The government is holding a competition to select the design of the new building, which
will include 28 courtrooms, four mediation rooms, a coroners courtroom and hearing spaces
for up to four tribunals.

Premier Peter Beattie said the winner of the design competition would be announced
in June and construction should begin early next year.

Mr Beattie said the new court complex, in Brisbane's central business district, was
expected to generate 600 jobs during the construction phase.

Part of Brisbane's current Magistrate Court, which has 18 courtrooms, was built in the
early 1970s.
