Vic: Firefighters battle to contain bushfires

MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - Firefighters were today hoping to contain two bushfires that
have burnt more than 350 hectares north-east of Melbourne before hot weather hits the
state on Thursday.

More than 230 firefighters are today battling to contain the two fires south of Eildon
which were started by lightening strikes on Sunday, a Department of Sustainability and
Environment spokesman said.

While the blazes are not a threat to private property, there are fears they could spread
if not contained by Thursday when temperatures are expected to soar into the 30s.

"Containment lines around both fires were constructed last night and tonight crews
will be backburning," a DSE spokesman said.

"We hope to have them contained by Thursday before it gets hot."

Tankers and aircraft are also being used to fight the fires.

Three fires in East Gippsland, north of Bairnsdale and east of Orbost, were contained last night.
