NSW: Strike and talks lead to agreement for HPM workers

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - A strike which erupted at an electrical components company's factories
in Sydney today ended with a likely agreement to break a six-months deadlock.

Both HPM Industries and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) confirmed the
agreement would include a commitment of no redundancies next year, a pay rise of three per
cent in 2000 and 3.5 per cent in 2001.

HPM workers, mostly migrant women with poor English skills, picketed the entrances to HPM's
Waterloo and Darlinghurst factories today until the strike was called off at 2.30pm.

Negotiations continued in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) before
Commissioner Jim Simmons and ended with an agreement between HPM, the AMWU and the Australian
Workers Union.

AMWU spokesman Adam Westlake said the union would recommend to workers at a meeting on
Monday to accept the claim.
