Fed: Anas appeal may proceed without federal govt backing

SYDNEY, Jan 17 AAP - An appeal against the acquittal of a man implicated in the murder
of Sydney mother Toula Soravia may go ahead without the backing of the federal government.

A court in the northern Greek town of Ioannina today found Greek-Australian Steve Anas,
33, not guilty of organising the bungled April 1994 armed robbery of a Sydney service
station in which Mrs Soravia was gunned down.

Anas, who could have faced a life sentence, fled Australia for Greece shortly after the killing.
